The Doctoral School of Literature at the University of Szeged offers a comprehensive PhD program titled “Literatures and Cultures in English,” which has been accredited since 1995. This program focuses on equipping students with critical perspectives, interpretive skills, and advanced research methodologies within the realms of British and American literary and cultural studies.
Key areas of study include the history and theory of literature, the multimediality of culture, and aspects of gender studies. Students engage with contemporary academic research tools and practices pertinent to the information society and digital humanities. The curriculum includes interactive seminars, research-driven seminars, and focused thesis-writing workshops that foster a robust academic environment.
The program spans four years, with the first two years dedicated to structured coursework requiring mandatory participation. This period culminates in a complex exam, which can only be attempted once more if needed. The latter two years emphasize individual research and dissertation writing, during which students are encouraged to attend scholarly conferences and contribute to academic publications. Additionally, participants have the opportunity to co-teach a BA course under the guidance of their supervisors. Dissertation submission is expected within five years of enrollment in the program.
