Accounting Anthems Revived at Corvinus University Alumni Reunion
Nearly seventy people attended the Accounting Alumni Evening held at the end of February, where former students joined faculty members to recall the history of the university and the program—and even revived the popular accounting anthems with guitar accompaniment.
Alumni from a wide range of graduation years—from the 1980s up to last year—gathered at the Faculty Club on Friday, February 20, for the Accounting Alumni Evening. At the beginning of the event, János Lukács, Head of Department, gave a welcome speech recalling important moments in the university’s history. After László Péter Lakatos offered his greetings, a champagne toast followed.
The accounting faculty also prepared a slideshow and an entertaining quiz about the program for the alumni. One of the highlights of the evening was the collective singing of the accounting anthems with guitar accompaniment ("Az ember csak tartozik megkövetel…" and "Számvitel nélkül mit érek én…"). These songs, passed down orally from one generation of accounting students to the next, were originally created about twenty years ago, and the authors of the songs were also present at this year’s alumni event.
Buoyed by this year’s success, the accounting alumni reunion is planned to be held again next year.
Why Alumni Events Matter for Accounting Professionals
Alumni gatherings like the one at Corvinus University serve multiple purposes beyond simple nostalgia. They create valuable networking opportunities where accounting professionals can connect across different generations and career stages. For recent graduates, these events provide mentorship opportunities and insights into career progression. For seasoned professionals, they offer a chance to give back and stay connected to academic developments in the field.
The accounting profession, perhaps more than many others, benefits from strong professional networks. Whether you’re working in public accounting, corporate finance, or government auditing, having a robust network can lead to new opportunities, partnerships, and professional development.
The Power of Shared Traditions in Professional Communities
The accounting anthems sung at the Corvinus reunion represent more than just musical entertainment—they embody the shared experiences and inside jokes that bind professional communities together. These traditions, passed down through generations of students, create a sense of belonging and continuity that extends throughout one’s career.
For accounting students and professionals, such traditions can serve as icebreakers in networking situations and create instant connections with fellow alumni. They also reinforce the unique culture of accounting education and practice, distinguishing it from other business disciplines.
Building Your Professional Network in Accounting
If you’re an accounting student or early-career professional, consider these strategies for building your professional network:
- Attend alumni events at your university, even if they seem intimidating at first
- Join professional accounting associations like ACCA, CPA, or your local accounting society
- Participate in continuing education seminars and workshops
- Engage with accounting faculty members who often have extensive industry connections
- Consider mentoring relationships, both as a mentee and eventually as a mentor
The Evolution of Accounting Education
While the accounting anthems at Corvinus have remained largely unchanged for two decades, the field of accounting itself continues to evolve rapidly. Today’s accounting professionals need to understand not only traditional financial reporting but also data analytics, cybersecurity, and international accounting standards.
Universities like Corvinus are adapting their curricula to prepare students for these changes while maintaining the core principles that have always defined the profession. The balance between tradition and innovation is crucial for producing well-rounded accounting graduates.
Looking Ahead: The Future of Accounting Alumni Networks
As the Corvinus accounting alumni reunion demonstrates, these gatherings remain relevant even in our digital age. However, the format may evolve to include virtual components, allowing alumni from around the world to participate. Some universities are already experimenting with hybrid events that combine in-person networking with online breakout sessions and digital networking platforms.
The accounting profession’s strong emphasis on ethics, accuracy, and professional standards makes these alumni networks particularly valuable. They serve as informal quality control mechanisms and sources of best practices that benefit the entire profession.
Conclusion: More Than Just a Reunion
The Accounting Alumni Evening at Corvinus University was more than just a social gathering—it was a celebration of professional identity, a networking opportunity, and a bridge between academic learning and professional practice. The revival of accounting anthems symbolizes the enduring connections formed through shared educational experiences.
For accounting students and professionals, events like these offer a reminder that while technical skills are essential, the relationships and networks we build throughout our careers are equally valuable. Whether you’re singing accounting anthems or discussing the latest changes in tax regulations, these connections form the foundation of a successful career in accounting.
