To apply for the program, candidates must hold a graduate or master’s degree (or a higher qualification). A master’s degree in fields such as literary studies, languages, philosophy, cultural studies, theatre or film studies, or translation is preferred.

- Demonstrated proficiency in English (minimum level B2/Intermediate) and/or any other required languages based on the specific programs.
- A research plan and a statement of motivation must be presented during a personal or online interview in the final phase of the application process.
- Applicants are encouraged to select a research topic and consult with the doctoral school and potential supervisors prior to submitting their application.

Entry qualification documents must be submitted in English. If the original documents are not in English, certified translations alongside verified copies are required. Academic records should be presented in English or as certified translations.

Language Requirements
The language of instruction for the program is German, with a required proficiency level of C2. Accepted scores for proficiency include:
- Cambridge English Proficiency (CPE)
- BULATS score: 90-100
- CLB/CELPIP: 10-12
- CAEL: 80-90
- IELTS exam: 8-9
