Study Doctoral School of Chemistry at University of Szeged

The Doctoral School of Chemistry at the University of Szeged emphasizes advanced research and education in various specialized fields of chemistry. The program is structured to last 48 months, divided into 8 semesters, requiring doctoral candidates to accumulate a total of 240 credit points (CR) to achieve the conclusio.

Throughout the study period, students engage in a variety of learning and research activities. A minimum of 90 CR must be completed during the first four semesters, including coursework and research work, which may involve experimental or numerical tasks, literature reviews, and calculations. Students can earn credit for publishing articles in international journals and presenting research at conferences, with specific credit allocations for each achievement.

Coursework is structured to reward students with CR for each completed course, contributing to a core requirement of at least five courses in the first two years. Teaching assistantships are also available, allowing students to earn additional credits through active participation in teaching. Presentations on research work at departmental seminars or scientific meetings are mandatory components of the program, underlining the emphasis on effective communication and dissemination of scientific knowledge.

Admission Requirements for the Doctoral Program

  • A Master's degree (MSc) in a relevant field such as chemistry, chemical engineering, pharmacy, or a related subject is required.
  • Applicants must submit an online application prior to the deadline.
  • Required documents include:
    • Proof of previous studies, including an official transcript showcasing the GPA of completed courses.
    • Evidence of prior scientific achievements, such as publications or posters.
    • A motivation letter, tailored to each program applied for.
  • The Entrance Exam Committee, comprised of three members including the Head of the School and the Head of the relevant program, will review the submitted documents to shortlist candidates for an interview.
  • Shortlisted candidates will participate in a 20-minute Skype interview, where they will discuss their research experience and respond to committee questions.
  • Entry qualification documents must be in English. If documents are not originally in English, certified translations along with copies of the originals are required.
  • Original entry qualification documents must be presented during the university enrollment.

Language Requirements

  • Proficiency in English is required. Accepted tests include:
    • TELC / ECL B2
    • TOEFL iBT: 72
    • RPDT: 72
    • Cambridge FCE: B2
    • IELTS: 5.5
    • LanguageCert B2 level
  • Applicants from specific countries or those who have completed their Master's Degree in English may not need to submit language test certificates. To know more about eligible countries, contact Studygram.
  • If the medium of instruction for the Master's program was English, a document from the university confirming this can serve as proof of language proficiency, provided it is submitted by the application deadline.
  • For diplomas awarded outside the European Union, acknowledgment by the Hungarian Equivalence and Information Center (HEIC) is necessary for dissertation submission. This verification is the student’s responsibility.

  • At least two references must be provided.
  • A motivation letter is required as part of the application.
  • Applicants must pay an application fee along with a non-refundable entrance exam fee of 100 EUR.
  • A recent medical certificate confirming general health status must be included. A sample form can be obtained from the specified public resource.
