Program Description
The aim of the program is to train Romologists (Experts on Roma Studies) who can transmit and communicate Roma Communities-related issues to governmental and non-governmental organizations.
Overview
Fieldwork and research methodology are in the core curriculum in order to prepare our graduates to work with real communities and other professionals after graduation. The two officially accepted languages spoken by Hungarian Roma are thought as well. Our graduates have a great chance to learn both of these languages: Boyash and Romani.
Syllabus
- 1st semester: Introduction to Social Studies, Learning-Centered Communication. History of Roma
- 2nd semester: Contemporary Roma Art, Music, and Literature- Overview, Language Practice I. (Boyash lexis), Introduction to Sociolinguistics, focusing on Bilingualism.
- 3rd semester: Sociolinguistics I, Ethnographic Studies on Roma Communities.
- 4th semester: Cultural Anthropology of Roma, Gypsies.
- 5th semester: Contemporary Roma art in Europe, Analysis.
- 6th semester: Language planning, language policy, Specializations, Specialization in Boyash language and culture, Specialization in Romani language and culture.
Required Documents
- Certified and translated (if originals are not in English) copies of school transcripts showing satisfactory completion of senior high school.
- Europass CV in English
- Motivation letter (introduction plus field of interest, etc.) in 3000 to 3500 characters.
- Copy of valid passport or national ID
- A medical certificate, (please fill out the document and attach the serologic test results)
- vaccination card (showing that you are immunized against HEP B)
- HEP A/B/C test*
- HIV test*
- Chest X-ray: Please attach the chest’s X-ray result (not the film!) in English/Hungarian! (Not older than 3 months)
- Transfer receipt of the EUR 140 application fee
- Official copy of the following language exam certificates:
- TOEFL (iBT internet-based): 66 points (www.ets.org/toefl)
- IELTS: Overall Band Score: 5.5 (www.ielts.org)
- Cambridge ESOL: B2 level (www.cambridgeenglish.org)
- TELC: B2 level (https://www.telc.net/en.html)

- Entrance Exam (personally or via Skype)
