Corvinus University of Budapest has announced a significant update to its language instruction for the upcoming spring semester. In November, university leadership decided to restructure the language-teaching provision, aligning with current domestic and international educational trends. This transition is designed to manage resources effectively while planning for a new, sustainable service model in the future.

For students currently enrolled in or beginning a compulsory second language, it is important to understand how this change will affect your academic schedule and course availability. This article outlines the specific arrangements for the spring semester and what students can expect moving forward.

Spring Semester Language Course Availability

The transitional format primarily affects students in specific degree programs who are undertaking a compulsory second language. If you are a student in one of the following programs, you can continue your language learning under unchanged conditions:

  • BA in International Business and International Studies
  • MA in International Studies
  • MA in International Economy and Business

For these students, registration for the following languages will be prioritized during the first week of the preliminary course registration period:

  • Spanish
  • French
  • Italian
  • Russian
  • Portuguese
  • Chinese
  • Arabic

These courses will be available exclusively to students from the listed programs during the initial registration week. This ensures that those with mandatory language requirements can secure their necessary classes.

Registration for Other Students

Students from other degree programs will have access to all other language courses from the start of the preliminary registration period. Starting from the second week of registration, students outside the priority programs will also be able to register for any remaining places in the Spanish, French, Italian, Russian, Portuguese, Chinese, and Arabic courses.

The university will monitor registration demand closely. Based on this assessment, Corvinus leadership will consider opening additional groups for courses where there is both a significant need and the capacity to do so.

Developing a New Service Model

This transitional period is a step toward a comprehensive new model for language teaching at Corvinus. The university is actively working on a long-term solution that is both effective and economically sustainable. To ensure the new model meets the needs of the student body, leadership is holding consultations with:

  • The Student Union
  • An informal student representative group
  • The professional head of the Language Centre and its staff
  • The University Senate

The goal is to introduce a new service model that is acceptable to all stakeholders, with a planned launch in the autumn semester of the 2026–27 academic year. This collaborative approach aims to create a robust and responsive language education framework for future students.

Steps for Affected Students

If you are an affected student, follow these steps to ensure a smooth registration process:

  1. Verify Your Program: Confirm that your degree program is on the list of those with priority access for the spring semester.
  2. Check Registration Dates: Be aware of the preliminary course registration period and the specific dates for the first and second weeks.
  3. Prepare Your Preferences: Decide on your language choice from the available options (Spanish, French, Italian, Russian, Portuguese, Chinese, Arabic) and have a backup option in case your first choice is full.
  4. Register Early: If you are in a priority program, register during the first week to secure your spot. If not, be ready to register from the second week onward for any available places.
