The physician helps patients after catching the flu, getting diabetes, or having cancer but is there another kind of doctor who prevents the diseases before it spreads? This sounds insane, I understand yet it’s real. Public Health Practitioner can prevent some diseases before it happens. This is how they save millions of souls.
In this blog, you’ll take a closer look at the general concept of Public Health in addition to the right path to becoming a skillful Public Health Practitioner.
What exactly is “Public Health”?
People have been trying to combat and prevent diseases for thousands of years. Public health is the science and art of preventing disease and injury in human populations. When a community has a public health issue it needs to be resolved as quickly as possible.
By helping populations prevent disease and promote health, they can reduce the number of deaths along with other consequences that could arise. Public health deals with the health of an entire population and not just an individual. The term is applied to medicine and other fields. Most governments make a public policy out of providing public health in their societies, but most of them also apply it in different ways.
Do We Have A Free Will Or We Are Under The Mercy Of Our Parents’ Genes?
This question is considered one of the common questions in daily life, people don’t have a crystal clear answer to this. Most people think that all of what happens to them is because of their genes, and believe in denying the freedom of behaviors.
Well, this is not true because we as human beings can do whatever we want.
This question was answered by Dr. Waleed Fitaihi (Chief Executive Officer of the International Medical Center (IMC):
In the past, we thought that our genes were our masters that hugely controlled our lives but now science has discovered a new fact. Scientists made an experiment on a cell where they removed its nucleus, the cell remained alive for 2 months, and they realized that the main role of the nucleus is only reproductive. They also discovered that the vital component of the cell is the “Cell Membrane” which has sensors that allow or disallow the entering of outer chemicals to get inside the cell. A real-life example could be “Computer Micro Chips” which are programmed from outside by the programmer because the microchips don’t work by themselves. Now we’re certain about the free will of ourselves, and the myth of being chained to our genes is debunked.
Now, you get the idea that you have free will, and have responsibilities for your actions.
That was directly related to biology, So how does that reflect on Public Health?
Public Health & Drug Addiction
In the last paragraph, you understood that the cell controls what gets inside it, and we are human beings can control what gets inside our bodies. The Public Health role in this situation is to spread this concept nationally and internationally, So people help themselves prevent some diseases like Drug Addiction.
Drug addiction is a community problem. Public health campaigns are central to the fight against drug abuse. The goal of such campaigns is the prevention of drug dependence and to improve the acceptance of medications. Effectiveness and cultural appropriateness are hallmarks of the best types of public health campaigns. This will play a key role in challenging the distorted and prejudiced perspectives that surround and undermine this vital health issue. This should give lots of people access to treatment and everyone could do with it, whether you’re an individual, a family member, or in a community.
Now, it’s time to connect the dots together by a small case.
There are many addicts who think that their parents’ genes are the major cause of being addicts. Once the public health practitioner spreads the truth about having free will, The addicts then should take responsibility and recover, So the excuse of being chained is broken.
For sure telling the addicts this truth won’t help in the full recovery but it’s one of the effective factors.
How Does Public Health Prevent Diseases?
According to WHO (The World Health Organization), 3 levels of disease prevention should be done, So people become safe & disease-free. The 3 levels include:
Increasing the overall health of the population (primary prevention). This is accomplished by; routine immunization programs being established everywhere and are usually at their best. Arrangements for the delivery of vaccine programs are well-developed.
Improving (secondary prevention) by routine screening for major forms of cancer in all countries. Screening programs should be evidence-based. Noncommunicable diseases must be noticed during routine physicals in most countries.
“Screening is the process of identifying healthy people who may be at increased risk of disease or condition. The screening provider then offers information, further tests, and treatment. This is to reduce associated risks or complications” (UK National Screening Committee.
Enhancing treatment and recovery (tertiary prevention) by availability and affordability of treatment for early-stage cancers in countries. A well-trained staff in evidence-based treatment and management approaches for non-communicable diseases and modern equipment.
